Keyboard Shortcuts

Overview

Thea has a small set of keyboard shortcuts. This page lists every one of them. Shortcuts that use Ctrl/Cmd don’t fire while you are typing in a text field.

Note: Ctrl on Windows/Linux, Cmd (⌘) on Mac

Projects

Shortcut	Where	Action
Ctrl/Cmd + N	Projects dashboard	Create a new project
Enter	New project dialog	Create the project
Enter	Renaming a project	Save the new name
Escape	Renaming a project	Cancel the rename
Ctrl/Cmd + T	Project view	Create a new timeline (once the project has documents)

Most browsers keep Ctrl/Cmd + N and Ctrl/Cmd + T for a new window and a new tab. If your browser does that, use the buttons instead.

New Project Chat

On the screen where you upload documents and chat with Thea to start a project:

Shortcut	Action
Ctrl/Cmd + U	Upload documents
Ctrl/Cmd + Enter	Send your message (only when the message box is not focused)

Timeline View

In the Timeline tab of a timeline, and on shared timeline links:

Shortcut	Action
Ctrl/Cmd + K	Open timeline search
Ctrl/Cmd + scroll or trackpad pinch	Zoom in and out
Escape	Leave Arrange mode (also in the Split tab)

Timeline Search

While the search box is open:

Shortcut	Action
Tab	Go to next search result
Shift + Tab	Go to previous search result
Enter	Close search (stay on focused event)
Escape	Close search

Event Drawer

When an event is open in the drawer:

Shortcut	Action
← / →	Previous or next event (not while typing)
Enter	Send your chat message about the event
Shift + Enter	New line in your chat message
Escape	Close the drawer

Chat and Refine Panels

In the timeline chat panel and the refine panel:

Shortcut	Action
Enter	Send message
Shift + Enter	New line

Data View

When editing a cell in the Data tab:

Shortcut	Action
Enter	Save the cell (single-line fields)
Escape	Cancel the edit

Pseudonymisation Viewer

In the find bar of the pseudonymisation viewer:

Shortcut	Action
Enter	Go to next match
Shift + Enter	Go to previous match
Escape	Close the viewer

Dialogs and Menus

Shortcut	Action
Escape	Close dialogs, drawers and menus
Tab / Shift + Tab	Move focus to the next or previous element
Enter / Space	Activate the focused button

Browser Shortcuts

Standard browser shortcuts also work:

Ctrl/Cmd + +	Zoom in (browser zoom)
Ctrl/Cmd + -	Zoom out (browser zoom)
Ctrl/Cmd + 0	Reset browser zoom
Ctrl/Cmd + W	Close tab

Customization

Keyboard shortcuts cannot be customized.

Tips for Efficiency

Combo Workflows

1. Fast search and navigation:

   • Ctrl/Cmd + K → Type search term → Tab to jump through matches → Enter to close

2. Event review:

   • Click an event → → to move to the next event → Escape to close

3. Search within filtered view:

   • Apply category filter → Ctrl/Cmd + K → Search within filtered events

Shortcut Conflicts

If a shortcut doesn’t work:

• Text fields: Ctrl/Cmd shortcuts and the arrow keys in the event drawer don’t fire while you type. Click outside the field first
• Browser shortcuts such as Ctrl/Cmd + N and Ctrl/Cmd + T may be taken by your browser
• Browser extensions might intercept shortcuts (try disabling)
• OS shortcuts take priority over app shortcuts

Mobile and Touch

Keyboard shortcuts are designed for desktop use.
